Sustainability

A Commitment to Future Generations

For Riva1920, sustainability is not just a goal—it is a core value that has guided every aspect of our work for over 30 years. While our company size does not mandate the adoption of sustainable practices according the current regulations, we have chosen to fully integrate sustainability principles across three fundamental pillars: environmental, social, and governance. This commitment reflects our dedication to creating furniture that stands the test of time, respects the environment, and enhances people’s quality of life.

Environmental Sustainability

Environmental sustainability is a guiding principle that influences every stage of our production process.

Riva1920 exclusively uses solid wood rather than chipboard, which often contains harmful paints or adhesives. Our wood is FSC-certified, sourced from responsibly managed forests to ensure that tree harvesting is balanced by proper reforestation. Additionally, we breathe new life into reclaimed materials such as ancient Kauri, Briccole of Venice, Lebanese Cedar, and repurposed Barrique barrels. Our philosophy prioritizes natural, non-toxic raw materials, including formaldehyde-free vinyl glues and natural finishes based on beeswax or pine extract oils, guaranteeing products that are safe for both people and the environment.

While we utilize epoxy resins to ensure durability and stability over time, we continuously invest in research and development to identify sustainable alternatives that maintain our high-quality standards. Our commitment to waste reduction is equally significant: every part of the wood finds a second life. For example, production offcuts are repurposed into smaller furnishings, while residual wood waste is recovered for pellet production, minimizing landfill waste and maximizing efficiency. Furthermore, we collaborate closely with local suppliers to shorten our supply chain and promote sustainable logistics, while also supporting the economic growth of the Brianza district.

Social Sustainability

At the heart of Riva1920’s social sustainability efforts are people: employees, collaborators, suppliers, and local communities.

We believe that the well-being of our workers is essential to fostering a productive and inspiring work environment. That is why we ensure safe working conditions with state-of-the-art personal protective equipment while also promoting an inclusive workplace that respects diversity and values individual talent. Special attention is given to female representation, with a high percentage of women on our team, contributing their expertise and versatility across all areas of the company. Pay equity is another key pillar—every employee, at every level, receives fair compensation aligned with their skills and contributions.

Beyond protecting our workers, we are actively engaged in strengthening local communities. We collaborate with artisans and suppliers from Brianza, helping to sustain a circular economy that supports the region. Events such as the "Festa del Legno" (Wood Festival) and cultural evenings at our Riva Center serve as opportunities for connection and exchange, blending tradition, art, and design to promote culture and a sense of belonging. The Festa del Legno, in particular, offers workshops for children, art exhibitions, and cultural activities for adults, creating spaces for education, inspiration, and training in the traditional craftsmanship that defines our heritage. Riva1920 is more than just a furniture manufacturer—it is a company dedicated to building a strong community based on respect, collaboration, and progress.

Governance

Sustainability at Riva1920 also extends to governance, ensuring an ethical, transparent, and inclusive approach to all strategic decisions.

We conduct regular internal and external audits to verify compliance with the highest environmental and social standards. This rigorous process allows us to continuously monitor our performance, identify areas for improvement, and provide transparent accountability for our actions.

Stakeholder engagement is another key element—we work closely with customers, employees, suppliers, and local communities to ensure that their needs and expectations are reflected in our business strategies. Diversity is also a core value within our management and board of directors. We promote inclusive representation, embracing different ages, genders, and cultural backgrounds, as we believe that a plurality of perspectives drives innovation and growth.

Additionally, we partner with NGOs and institutions to develop strategic collaborations that advance sustainability initiatives. This approach aligns us with global efforts and amplifies our positive impact. Our governance model is participatory and responsible, ensuring that every decision is made with people’s well-being and the planet’s preservation in mind. Finally, transparency is a cornerstone of our philosophy—we openly share details about our production processes, material sourcing, and sustainability goals, fostering trust with our stakeholders and reinforcing our reputation as an ethical and responsible company.
